Online-Caregiver Support Group Meeting

September 3, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

FREE

Coping with Dementia is conducting our Care Partner Networking Support Groups on line, using ZOOM. This is a way of getting and providing support, connecting with others around the country, and attending them from your home at a time that works for you.
We will continue to host these networking groups weekly. They have been a great way to take down the geographical barriers. No matter where you live, you can connect and get support in the journey of being a care partner for a person living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Support Groups are one of the ways to know that you are not alone. You may even have a smile when you leave.

    1. Sharon, All events have been canceled through July. We may see some workshops starting up in August. Sorry for the delay in getting back with you.. If you email me at [email protected] we are doing online support groups 3 days a week. I can provide you with more information just email me. thank you.

  1. I remember seeing a long term care facility associated with Shands or a University in Florida that had some innovative treatment and environment for people with Lewy Body or pyschosis with dementia, ,but now I can’t find it. The LTC facility now caring for my brother-in-law is talking about giving us 45 days to find another place. He is aggressive. Any ideas?

    1. Diane, I have not heard of a LTC that is specific to Lewy Body. This form of dementia is a very difficult one to manage as you know, and it does not do well on many medications. In most LTC they use medication for behaviors that they think are aggressive, combative or refusal to care and this could make behaviors worse for a person living with Lewy Body. Not too many LTC know about compassion, person center care along with validation. Most behaviors in people living with dementias are often provoked by another person without even knowing that they are doing it because of the lack of training and knowledge of any forms of dementias. A couple of things I would talk to the LTC about is
maybe getting a psychiatrist in to evaluate your BIL. If they have given him medication for behaviors to possibly start to get him off of it and see what happens. Find out what may be the triggers for what they are calling aggressive, most people living with dementia do not do things without a reason, it is not random. Document when the behaviors are happening , time of day, before a task, and see what the pattern is, you see the pattern and then you can adapt. They can issue a 45 day notice but they can stop it at any time, so you can request these things and if they change something you may see a difference and they can cancel the 45 day, this is a requirement. Shands I believe does have a memory disorder clinic and you may want to touch base with them and see id=f they can assist you if you are in Florida. I wish I had some better information for you, but many memory care communities know little about dementia as a person centered disease and they want everyone to be the same and this does not work well for all. Please let me know if there is anything else that you need. I do online support groups and you are welcome to join us, email me for the links at [email protected].
